I: History
Part 1: The First World
The worlds now known as the Seven Spheres began as one world. This world was populated by one race, a race called the Feanor. The Feanor, despite their advances in the realm of technology, were divided. One group worshipped the abilities of science to cure their problems, the other sect preferred their natural abilities in manipulating magic.
The science sect sent their most terrible weapons of war against the magicians. In these histories, this became known as the Magic War. The resultant battle was so violent, the Feanor were eradicated as a race, and the very fabric of their world was shattered into nine different worlds.
For many an age no life walked on these worlds. Then, two races began to emerge, with no records of the Feanor's wars blemishing their world.. . .at least on the surface. The mystic sect had left various temples around their part of the world, places of power from where they might be able to mount a counteroffensive, should their race survive. The Science sect buried the most terrible of their machines, the Genocider, under several mountains in their worlds.
Part 2: The Nine Spheres and the Great War
The two races were the Hadran, who eventually found and repaired the Feanor's machines from the First Age. The other race, the Fennec, was a tribal, naturalistic people, dedicated to recording history and learning. Their shamen recorded the history of the Feanor in the ancient texts, hidden in their temples on the sphere of Deianyra.
Both the Fennec and the Hadran spread over the Nine Spheres, each race adapting to the various terrains on the Nine Spheres. Eventually, evolution began to take a hand in things. Both the Fennec and the Hadran began creating new forms of life. The races created by the Hadran--the Angels, the Mermen, and the Humans, among others--were creatures of reason, conceived in order and genetically predisposed to do as the Hadran commanded.
The Fennec, whose abilities at creating life were more varied--the Dragons, the Vampires, the Kraken, and others--allowed the races they crated more or less complete autonomy, reasoning that it was better for them to grow into their own.
As the Nine Spheres became more crowded, tensions rose. The Hadran, unwilling to allow communing with the Fennec's races imposed strict patrols with their sky-ships and even punished their own races when they dared to explore the Fennec's spheres.
Eventually--the exact instigation of this is lost to antiquity--the Fennec and the Hadran went to war. The Fennec took a defensive position, while the Hadran maintained an aggressive posture, capturing the Fennec's races with their Slaver units. But even this amount of control wasn't enough for the Hadran.
They discovered the last Genocider unit the Feanor had secreted. They began using it to ruin the Fennec and kill their races. Only the most desperate of chances would save the world from the Hadran's mania.
Two Spheres were destroyed before the Fennec shame, using their magical abilities, created a magic gestalt. The Fennec gestalt managed to disarm the Genocider in the midst of the destruction of two more spheres. The gestalt also managed to shunt the entire Hadran's sphere into nether space, everywhere in the remaining seven spheres but nowhere at the same time. The Hadran, as a result of being outside the flow of time, were kept static. No more could be born, no more would die. They were kept separate until their reason returned to them and they could digest the lessons of the war.
With that, the Fennec gestalt dissipated. Half their race was dead, another fourth lost to the gestalt. Only one of their leaders, Kael, survived. It was left to him to re-build the world.
Part 3: The Seven Spheres and the Reconstruction
Kael knew that the mistakes of the past would be repeated, should any race have dominance over another. So he kept them separated, controlled by a neutral source.
He built over one sphere the remains of the Hadran's machines and the Genocider, creating the Mother Machine. This sphere would control the others, maintaining order and neutrality without dominating those that it was built to protect. Kael moved this sphere to the center of the other, and named it Achromurcra, the Sphere of the Machines.
The Angels, the highest servants of the Hadran, were left to a sphere of light, with a forever-burning sun. He named this sphere Nycheladra, the Sphere of Light.
The Kraken and the Mermen he left of a world of eternal ocean, which was large enough for them both. He names this sphere Ananta, the Sphere of Oceans.
The Dragons were given the craggy, mountainous terrain of Cynon, the Sphere of Earth.
The offshoots of the Angels, a handful of beings called the Fallen, were taken to Ladon, the last sphere that the Genocider had burned. Somehow, the Fallen were able to thrive in this wasteland, with only few tools of their land to aid them.
The final race, whom even the Fennec feared were the Vampires. Just as there existed a sphere with eternal light, there was a sphere of forever darkness. He put the Vampires there, Taruga, the Sphere of the Cursed Dark.
With the races separated and war near averted, all that was left for Kael to do was make three final instructions to the Mother Machine:
1) To monitor the Hadran (in what was informally called the Zerosphere). When their mania for dominance had subsided, the machine was to bring them to them and give them their new role in the Spheres. Not as guardians of order, but of justice.
2) In six Ages (a thousand years of our time) to crates the Gates--doorways to and from the other worlds, a way of gradually easing the races into co-operation.
3) Each race was given a copy of the history of the worlds that had preceded, and Kael's hopes for the unity, which was to come.
With that, Kael returned to the final sphere, Deianyra, the Sphere of Earth. He renounced the last of the Fennec's power. As his race slowly became extinct, he dedicated himself to writing even more books of knowledge from the times previous.
Part 4: The First Unity War
With the creation of the Gates, there came an age of peace and unheard of prosperity. However, the races, instead of moving toward uniting, were at each other's throats over matters of race. In fact, the sole unilateral declaration the races were able to make was the forbidding of the races to mix... .a directive that was punishable by death, and stood in the way of Kael's dream of unity.
Tabris, an Angel from Nycheladra married Calladrius Dhuron, a Dragon from Cynon. They were both followers of the Unity, which taught that one from two races would be born and unite the Spheres. They conceived a child, Darken Blackangel, and raised him in secret, under the guidance of Kael himself. Kael taught him the skills of defense, relying on knowledge, rather than the arts of war, magic, and science.
However, the Vampires and the Fallen, two races excluded from the cooperation the other shared, united their races by royal marriage. The Vampire Emperor, Cryptonus, and the Blood Countess of the Fallen conceived a daughter, Kirone Witchfire, and educated her in the ways of magic and science.
Kirone dedicated herself to uniting her people forcefully, and recovering the old knowledge to conquer the other spheres. She organized a small band of warriors, and discovered an ancient sky-ship, the Skyshadow. On board were forges that would create Baltrons, robotic warriors used by the Hadran in the Great War. She also found the Hate Plague, a dangerous weapon of war created by the Hadran as a weapon of retribution.
Kirone and her group infiltrated Achromurcra and infected the Mother Machine with the Plague. Darken and his lover, Maryna Cyclade attempted to stop her, but Darken was brutally beaten, and Maryna was murdered by Kirone's own hand.
Darken retreated temporarily, returning to Deianyra and creating the Requiem Armor. He mounted a one-man assault on the Skyshadow, severely damaging it and forcing them to retreat into Ladon, where the ship crashed. Kirone blasted Darken with an eldritch bolt, causing his armor to explode, apparently killing him.
He returned under mysterious circumstances and unleashed an anti-plague, which finally ended the First Unity War. The races of the Seven Spheres, shocked into co-operation, destroyed the Gates to Ladon and Taruga, and even now, maintain a vigil should Kirone return.
II: The Seven Spheres Today
DEIANYRA
Deianyra, the Sphere of Earth, is unique in that it has two distinct climates--forest ranges on one hemispheres, icy mountains in the other--and is also unique in that there is no ruling class that presides over its function. Consequently, Deianyra is considered a lawless zone, a place where many races live free.
The skies above the sphere are the domain of the Techno-Pirates, a cadre of freebooters, mostly led by robots and cyborgs left over from the Great War , machines that found sentience and subsist by raiding parties in other spheres. Their small fleet of skyships have the ability to create their own teleportation gates, making hit-and-run attacks possible. But the Techno-Pirates are, by and large a reclusive people, and do not attack unless provoked.
Kael, who maintains his dwellings in the ancient temples that once housed the Fennec's Center of Learning, rules over, the land however informally. There, he maintains a refuge for people deemed outcasts. Notable of those who have studied under him include Darken Blackangel, Liandra Skyshade, and Krios Condorassian. Also notable is Kael's extensive collection of books--histories, spell books, ancient technologies--all written by him. He maintains a vigil over the collected knowledge, unwilling to se it fall into the wrong hands, especially after Kirone Witchfire's theft a year ago.
Deeper in the darkest forest of Deianyra there live nomadic bands of spider-people, the Cymone with an inherent mystic ability to weave webs of illusion and binding to capture their prey. They do not attack, however, unless their nests in the thick tree branches are disturbed.
Further on, in the mountainside of Deianyra, there live a race of feline warriors, the Jakyra, led by the Angel/Jakyra hybrid Tigerhawk. They roam the foothills and cliffs of the lower mountains. Further up the mountains, in a cave in the highest range of mountains lives a solitary angel, Gailion Moondancer, who exiled himself there after the death of his wife and daughter. Though reclusive, he did once meet with Darken Blackangel and train him in the use of his angel's cry.
ANANTA
Very little is known about Ananta, the Sphere of Water beyond what has been revealed by the occasional visitors to the royal palaces of the Mermen and the Kraken. What is known, however, is that Ananta is completely composed of water and coral--no landmasses exist. Gigantic sea-creatures swim the waters of Ananta, the most dangerous of which the Kraken have domesticated.
The kingdom of the Mermen is located only 1,000 feet below the water's surface. The Mermen provide transportation to the many races of the other spheres that journey there. Another 9,000 feet below lies the kingdom of the Kraken, who, as opposed to the Mermen, eschew mechanical things and have instead, trained the organisms and larger creatures to work in harmony.
The Mermen and the Kraken, notable for maintaining a peace for an entire age, live in harmony, each recognizing their common home. The two races tend to hold themselves aloof when it comes to matters of aiding the other races, but are still held in high esteem.
CYNON
The mountainous regions of Cynon, coupled with its hot climate and harsh skies can be uncomfortable for most visitors to this Sphere, the Sphere of Earth. On the rocks of Cynon live a race of dragons that long ago lost their wings. Considered throwbacks by the ruling Dragons, the Guivre live in small tribes and some work as mercenaries. A few Guivre enlisted in Kirone's army during the First Unity War.
Above them, in temples hewn from the burning rocks of the mountains live the Dragons, a proud race, strong and near invulnerable. King Atlan rules his subjects with not an iron first, but a gentle hand. Most Dragons aspire to join the elite cadre of warriors known as the Wardragons.
Cynon is notable for being the site of a border conflict with the Angels, sparking an ongoing feud with the Dragons that endures, despite their current co-operation, to this day.
NYCHELADRA
The Sphere of the Light, the home of the Angels. At the center of this Sphere there burns an eternal sun, making Nycheladra a time of eternal sun. What passes for night on Nycheladra is a time akin to dusk, though the sun does not set.
There are no landmasses on Nycheladra, only those that the angels have constructed. Most of them dwell in Sky-cities, huge living areas housing hundreds of thousands, created from old sky-ships. The largest city, Imperial Center, boasts over 2 million inhabitants. Favored members of the Imperial court are given their own private homes, smaller versions of a Skycity. Called Gravity Pagodas, these dwellings are often used as retreats when the Imperial Court is not in session.
Recently, the warrior classes of the Angels, the Seraphim, have begun constructing newer Skyships, to augment their forces. These ships, built under the orders of the Captain of the Guard, Lord Sandalphon, are being built as defensive weapons should the Unity War begin again.
ACHROMURCRA
The Sphere of the Machines, and the Guardian Sphere of the other six, Achromurcra is in fact totally occupied by the Mother Machine, built by Kael to monitor the rest of them, to prevent a war. Each ruler has a line of communication to the Mother Machine, which is always open. The Machine also maintains the gate system, allowing travel to and from the various Spheres.
The Mother Machine regulates all environmental activity on the other six spheres, and it was this factor that Kirone used to spread the Hate Plague at the climax of the First Unity War. While Darken Blackangel purged the plague, and safeguards were put in place to prevent this, such an attack is expected again.
There are no races living in the Mother Machine, per se. However, from time to time, the Machine has sent emissaries in the form of the other races made from it to communicate their wishes. Recently, the Machine has created a series of defensive drones to maintain itself against another attack.
LADON
Ladon, the Cursed Wasteland is one of the current "Outlawed Regions" This Sphere is a desert, hot, dry and where there isn't a vast ocean of sand, there are cruel rocks, which offer little shelter against the near-constant sandstorms. It is not often traveled, not even by the Techno-Pirates.
Of the two main races in this Sphere, the reptilian Sectrun is the one native to that world. The other, more dominant race, The Fallen are actually an evolutionary offshoot of the Angels, live in a tribal collective, ruled over by the Blood Countess, herself a vassal of the Vampires of Taruga. However, this coalition is incredibly shaky, made even moreso by the growing cases of vampirism spreading through the tribes.
The most notorious of the Fallen, Kirone Witchfire, found the ancient ship the Skyshadow in the rocks of Ladon. Even now she has been exiled back there, the gates to the world destroyed.
TARUGA
This sphere, its very name a curse, is known as the Sphere of the Accursed Dark. Taruga is in many ways the darker duplicate of Nycheladra. In Taruga it is eternal night, and by that fact, the Vampires, the dominant race in Taruga, live at the apex of their power. Their Emperor, Cryptonus, is the oldest living ruler in the Seven Spheres.
The Vampires have very little contact with any race outside their home sphere other than the Fallen of Ladon, but have been in several wars with the Peluda, an insect-like race that preys on Vampires. Considered vermin by the Vampires, they routinely kill 1/4 of the Vampire population every year.
There have been almost no explorations of Taruga, even Kael has not journeyed too far into their realm. It is rumored that at the center of their world exists a sleeping god, the lord of Darkness itself.
THE ZEROSPHERE
During the Great War, the seventh sphere was shunted into nether space. The home sphere of the Hadran, Kael shunted them into nether space two ages ago. In time, the remaining Hadran, made perpetually alive by existing outside time, outgrew their need for control, and thus became worthy of Kael's final gift to them.
The Mother Machine, monitoring the handful of them left, in time sent them a message: If they could put aside the need to control, they could serve the cause of justice. This was born the order of Chrysadors, given the most powerful weapon in the Seven Spheres.
A Chrysador works in secret, tracking down the worst criminals, those who pose the greatest danger to the Seven Spheres. Once they find their target, The Chrysadors use their deadliest and only weapon, the Chronomezer, to remove the target from the flow of time and space, and thus imprisons them in nether space forever.
III: The Races of the Seven Spheres
The Angels:
Pale-skinned beings with great white wings, the Angels consider themselves the leading race of the Seven Spheres. Most keep their original wings, however, some have their wings altered . Notable among these are the member of the Royal family, who have their wings replaced with flame wings. The King had six wings, the other members have four. Other angels have their wings altered into different colors or different forms, from bat wings to insectile wings.
The angels are effective warriors--the Seraphim, their warrior class, is feared and respected by all the races of the Spheres. They posses above average physical strength, and have a certain degree of extrasensory perception, which varies according to how it is developed. The angels also have a hypersonic ability, which can be focused to such a degree that it can shatter steel.
The Dragons:
The rivals of the Angels, the Dragons are large reptilian humanoids with great leathery wings. Unlike the Angels they cannot fly--merely glide on air currents. Their hides, which are touch enough to shatter an Angel lance thrown at them, coupled with their formidable strength and ability to breathe fire, make them effective warriors despite their limitations.
The Fallen:
An evolutionary offshoot of the Angels, the Fallen were exiled to the Sphere of Ladon. However, in a surprising turn, they did not die, instead they thrived in the desert wastes. While the Fallen were descended from the angels and bear very little physical resemblance save for the white skin and higher than normal physical strength. Fallen are notable for their large pointed ears. Recently, a great deal of Fallen have become infected with the vampire plague.
The Vampires:
The Vampires are a pale-skinned race who subsist on blood. Their own sphere, Taruga is plentiful with animals that are routinely blooded to slake their thirst. They also have had dealing with the Fallen, and have turned many of them into Vampires.
While the Vampires can exist in places of light, most of their abilities--shape shifting, greater than normal strength, extrasensory perceptions--weaken and/or vanish under the light. Thus, they usually wear night-suits, biological armor that keeps them fed with blood and shunts some of the more harmful effects of the light away from them.
The Mermen:
The Mermen cannot live outside of water, and are notable for another adaptation, their long tails and dorsal fins. These are many and varied--while most Mermen have blue skins, some develop green skin with colorful fins. Their society is fairly easygoing--they are notable in that they have no warrior class, no standing army at all.
The Kraken:
Unlike the Mermen, the Kraken can survive for short times outside of the oceans. They have two legs, unlike the Mermen, and their skin in white, instead of the flesh tones of the Mermen. Kraken also are notable for they're wearing of sea life, a manifestation of their organic technological use of sea life.
The Jakyra:
A younger race, the Jakyra live in the foothills of Deianyra's massive mountain range. They are feline, resplendent in their white fur and striped tails. However, there are some small differences. First and notable is the bone crest, which grows from the rear of their skull. They are far stronger than most other races, except for the Dragons. They have sharp claws on both their hands and feet and use them as deadly weapons.
Their king, Tigerhawk, once aided the Royal Family against an infiltration by the Vampires. In gratitude he was given Lord Protector status--notable because he is the only member of an outside race to be recognized as such--and was given a Tiger Clasp (much like the Eagle Clasps of warrior angels--a multi-purpose weapon powered by magic.) Also he was genetically altered to generate a pair of wings. Whether this will affect the further evolution of the Jakyra remains to be seen.
